The funeral services for LaVona Lee York, 84, will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2025, at Bethel Hawley Baptist Church, Hawley, Oklahoma, with Pastor Gary Lillie officiating. Burial will follow at New Home Cemetery, Nash, with arrangements by Wilson Funeral Home of Pond Creek.
LaVona was born on June 7, 1941, to Edgar L. Messenger and LaVona “Bonnie” Wald. She joined her Heavenly Father on December 2, 2025.
She married William L. “Bill” York on August 5, 1960. Together they welcomed two daughters, Janet and Lisa.
LaVona graduated from Nash High School in 1959. She attended Oklahoma State University and later received her degree from Enid Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper at Farmers Grain in Pond Creek before retiring from Jet State Bank to become a full-time Granny. LaVona and Bill made their home in the Nash area, where they farmed and were active in their community. She taught Sunday School and faithfully served in the Nash community for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and her brother, Ted.
LaVona leaves a legacy of family: daughter Janet and husband Larry Cokeley; daughter Lisa and husband Myles Dershem, all of Nash; grandkids, Jeremy and Jessy Dershem, Jenna and Wesley Spencer, Jamie and Justin Hunt and Laura and Thomas Deterding; great-grandkids, Jase, Joey and Jorja Dershem, Jaxon and Payton Spencer, Braedyn, Dayton, Kamri, Jaren and Jamison Hunt.
LaVona is also survived by her brother Sam Messenger and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials in LaVona’s name may be made to Bethel Hawley Baptist Church or Galactosemia Foundation with Wilson's Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
